Description |
Assignment of errors to the U.S. Supreme Court wherein Hyacinthe Lasselle tried to appeal the Indiana Supreme Court's decision to free Polly Strong, overturning Knox County court ruling in favor of Lasselle in the case, Polly (a woman of color) v. Lasselle. Ultimately, the U.S . Supreme Court refused to hear the case and the state's decision was upheld. Polly v. Lasselle was the first slavery case tried by the Indiana Supreme Court and although the remaining enslaved persons in Indiana were not automatically freed, the case set a crucial legal precedent and upheld the Indiana Constitution of 1816. |
